Joint Programme Results

In Burundi, the Joint Team’s support focused on building capacity and ensuring equitable access to HIV prevention, treatment and care services among vulnerable and key populations. New differentiated service delivery guidelines scaled up access to combination HIV prevention services for people who are at high risk of HIV infection. For instance, in humanitarian settings, more than 270 young peer educators in refugee camps were empowered to promote and increase uptake of HIV prevention and sexual and reproductive health services. As a result, about 35 000 refugees including adolescents were sensitized on these services (UNHCR). A total of 60 female sex workers in Makamba and Rumonge provinces improved their knowledge of HIV and gender-based violence prevention and contraceptive methods and entrepreneurship, including basic sewing skills (UNFPA).

In 2022, all pregnant women in five refugee camps were supported to access early antenatal care and voluntary HIV counselling and testing before 14th week of pregnancy. As a result, 1983 pregnant women received HIV testing and three women wo tested HIV positive were linked to prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) services. In addition, 216 people living with HIV in these five refugee camps accessed treatment and follow up in hospitals and district sites (UNHCR).

Task-shifting, clinical mentoring missions and integration of HIV and tuberculosis services have improved these services among people living with HIV in 10 health districts, through financial and technical support from the Joint Team. Burundi adopted innovative testing and treatment approaches aligned with global recommendations, including index testing, partner testing, self-testing and the expansion of dolutegravir regimen. Additionally, 3-6 months multimonth dispensing of antiretrovirals programmes introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic continued to benefit eligible people living with HIV across the country. Besides, a roadmap was developed and validated to accelerate progress in eliminating mother-to-child transmission, and 231 provincial level healthcare providers are now better equipped and regularly mentored to deliver quality PMTCT and paediatric HIV services (UNICEF, WHO, UNAIDS Secretariat).

Vulnerable and key populations, including people living with HIV, women and young people were empowered to defend their rights to access quality healthcare services. For instance, a national community-led monitoring programme was rolled out to improve access to HIV prevention and treatment services and report on human rights violations, including through implementation of a new observatory tool (UNAIDS Secretariat).
