Joint Programme Results

Guinea continued to improve prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) and paediatric HIV, antenatal care, hepatitis, syphilis and tuberculosis services with significant support from the Joint Team. Integration of these services in 24 facilities and training of 409 healthcare providers boosted the delivery of integrated HIV services including PMTCT, antenatal and paediatric HIV services (UNICEF). As a result, HIV testing among children and adolescents significantly increased and a total of 14 939 adolescents and young people accessed HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and antenatal services in 2022.

A total of 438 schools across the country are integrating comprehensive sexuality education using 342 trained teachers and school counsellors. The mayors of Kodiaran and Kondianakoro pledged to scale up community-led comprehensive sexuality education in their cities following intense advocacy by the Joint Team. As part of the Sininko initiative, 193 innovative youth-led HIV prevention projects were identified and three winning initiatives, including an automatic male condom dispensing project were selected to receive technical and financial support for implementation as well as 20 young people improved their knowledge of project management and marketing (UNFPA).

In the area of HIV testing, 527 people from key populations, including fishermen and female sex workers in Katchek Island (Boké) accessed HIV testing services through a partnership with the Guinean network of people living with HIV (REGAP+) (UNAIDS Secretariat). In Mandiana prefecture, 120 sex workers also accessed HIV testing services at Oudjala health centre, 50 condom vending machines were installed and 152 000 condoms were distributed, thanks to a collaboration with the civil society organization Fraternité Médicale Guinée (FMG). More than 5.7 million condoms were procured and distributed by the Joint Team in workplaces and health facilities in 2022. Furthermore, 31 members of REGAP+ and coalition of women leaders (COFEL) received training on data collection, analysis and dissemination as well as advocacy to strengthen community-led monitoring, access to equitable services and protection of human rights (UNAIDS Secretariat).

A total of 42 641 (24 733 women) people living with or affected by HIV and tuberculosis received nutritional support and food assistance with a 97% improvement in nutritional status and only 0.1% lost to follow-up. Additionally, 50 people living with HIV benefitted from cash transfers to improve their health outcomes. In Mandiana prefecture, 2436 women from 88 community groups received training and equipment to establish income generating activities which resulted in an increased number of antenatal care visits in the prefecture within six months—from 682 to 2556, where 1978 people were tested for HIV and 19 people were found positive (UNDP).
