  • HIV prevention services and information reached close to 2 million adolescents, young people and people from key populations.
  • Capacity building initiatives improved data collection on stigma and discrimination and strengthened community-led monitoring.
  • Studies generated evidence on the social protection of people living with HIV and inclusiveness of existing programmes.
Joint Programme Results

The U-Test model for the prevention of new HIV infections among adolescents, young people, and key populations was implemented in 14 health districts, scaling up access to these services for 47 445 young people. Digital HIV prevention initiatives, including ‘Hello Ado’ reached close to 1.9 million adolescents and young people and 37 163 HIV self-testing kits were distributed to this group (UNICEF, UNESCO, UNFPA). The national guidelines for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) were revised, and 811 eligible young people enrolled on PrEP in 2022 (UNICEF, WHO, UNAIDS Secretariat). Furthermore, the ‘VCT@Work’ initiative provided HIV testing and counselling services for 2633 workers in Abidjan and Grand Lahou (ILO).

In partnership with the Youth Employment Agency, 40 female sex workers were empowered to design and set up small enterprises; and peer educators who were trained on gender-based violence case management referred 35 female sex workers who were survivors of gender-based violence to appropriate care and support services (UN Women).

Intensive advocacy from the Joint Team supported Côte d’Ivoire in joining the newly created Global alliance to end AIDS in children, and in affirming the country’s commitment to scale up prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) and paediatric HIV services through the development of an action plan (UNICEF, WHO, UNAIDS Secretariat). A total of 260 midwives from 19 health districts strengthened their skills on the delivery of PMTCT services, and the use of a new antiretroviral treatment protocol for children and adolescents. Community-based HIV screening and advanced antenatal care strategies reached 6494 pregnant women. Family testing model enabled 11 601 children and adolescents aged 0-19 years and 4358 sexual partners to access HIV testing services. Transportation of blood and other samples from health centres to reference laboratories was also facilitated, increasing timely diagnosis and treatment initiation among women and children across the country (UNICEF).

In collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission, capacity of 141 people including human rights officers and government officials was strengthened to further defend the rights of people living with HIV and key populations (UNDP). Ten regional action plans were developed to overcome stigma and discrimination in health facilities and communities, and 70 people from networks of people living with HIV and key populations were trained on stigma, discrimination, and human rights. A technical note analysing feasibility of including people living with HIV in current social protection mechanisms was developed and 110 representatives of networks of people living with HIV, key populations and people with disabilities in five regions (Abengourou, Bouaké) received training on the existing social protection system in five regions of the country (Abengourou, Bouaké) (ILO, UNAIDS Secretariat).
